Ella has been volunteering with Aphasia Re-Connect since 2020 – this is her experience:
I started volunteering with Aphasia Re-Connect seven months ago to gain some experience of the role of an SLT and knowledge about aphasia before I begin studying for a Speech and Language Therapy MSc. I make weekly calls to my telephone buddy, and facilitate and provide resources for the Younger People’s Group which currently runs over Zoom. My time volunteering has been extremely insightful, and meeting everyone at Aphasia Re-Connect has shown me how differently aphasia can affect each individual person.
Getting to know everyone and making new friends has been the highlight of my experience. Everyone at the Younger People’s Group has such a variety of interests and hobbies that there are always new stories to talk about, and every week I learn something new. Topics we’ve discussed include travel, fashion, historical figures, space exploration and many more, so there is always something for everyone. Calling my telephone buddy has also taught me a lot, and I have become a lot more knowledgeable about football and London’s food markets! I look forward to catching up with her every Saturday morning.
